Littleport is the town on the river that thought it was the Isle. Sutton, Haddenham, Stretham, Wilburton, Witchford, Witcham, Mepal, Coveney, Little Downham, Pymoor — the Fens west of Ely. Flat, straight, a wind that hits a van like a hand.

A10 from Cambridge, or A14 then north. The Fens are a different driving job to the M11. Littleport is a town and a station. Sutton has a church on a hill that is not a hill by any other county's standards. Mepal has the old airfield. If you are between villages, the road name matters; there are no landmarks except the next bridge. Far. Honest.
