Shoeburyness is the garrison and the sands. Shoebury Garrison is a name that still means something. Great Wakering and Barling Magna are the villages behind it. The road runs out of land.
Route notes
Through Southend and keep going, or the A13 then the Shoebury road. The garrison has gates and old military roads. The East Beach car park is a real place. Great Wakering is a village with a high street. Barling is smaller. From Loughton this is the far corner of the far. We come. We do not pretend we were already in Thorpe Bay.
